Curriculum

At Reading Girls' School, our curriculum is designed to be broad, balanced, relevant, differentiated, and inclusive, fully aligned with the National Curriculum. We are committed to ensuring that all students engage fully with the National Curriculum at Key Stage 3, providing them with the essential knowledge and skills needed for future success. A key part of our approach is fostering British values alongside Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) understanding. To best meet the diverse needs of our students, we use various grouping strategies tailored to each subject area.

Key Stage 3 (KS3)

During KS3, students engage with a wide range of subjects, ensuring they experience a rich and varied curriculum. This broad foundation allows them to make well-informed decisions when selecting subjects for Key Stage 4. Our focus is on ensuring all students access and engage with the full National Curriculum, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and understanding required to progress confidently to the next stage of their education.

Key Stage 4 (KS4)

At KS4, we emphasise a personalised curriculum, enabling students to choose subjects that align with their strengths and aspirations. All students study a core curriculum, which includes English, Maths, Science, plus core PE, RS and PSHE, alongside a selection of option subjects. We actively involve both students and parents in this decision-making process to ensure they are choosing subjects that support their future goals. Our KS4 curriculum is designed to provide clear progression routes, supporting smooth transitions into post-16 education and preparing students for further study and employment.

To ensure continuous academic progress, we carry out formal assessments in line with our Assessment, Recording, and Reporting schedule.

INTENT

At Reading Girls’ School, our intent is to empower every young person to thrive by fostering a culture of excellence, kindness and respect. We are committed to providing a broad and balanced curriculum that nurtures students' academic, social and emotional development, instilling in them a spirit of curiosity, resilience and global citizenship. The curriculum is inclusive, ambitious and designed to meet the needs of every individual student. Our aim is to create a supportive and inclusive environment where students are encouraged to explore, question and grow, enabling them to reach their full potential and become independent, brave and compassionate individuals.

To realise our vision and core values, we will implement a range of strategies and initiatives that prioritise the holistic development of our students. Academically, we will offer rigorous and personalised learning experiences, tailored to meet the diverse needs and interests of each student. Our curriculum policy will drive not only academic excellence but also the development of critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills.

Furthermore, we will create a supportive and inclusive school culture where kindness, respect, and empathy are actively promoted and celebrated. Through assemblies, workshops and extracurricular activities, we will educate students about the importance of diversity, equality and inclusion, fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance for all members of our community.

Additionally, we will provide opportunities for students to take on leadership roles and participate in service-learning projects that connect them with the wider community. By empowering students to make a positive difference in the world around them, we aim to cultivate responsible and compassionate global citizens.

IMPACT

The impact of our efforts will be evident in the knowledge and skills of our students, both academically and personally. Through our commitment to excellence, students will demonstrate increased academic achievement, confidence and a lifelong love of learning. Our emphasis on kindness and respect will foster a supportive and inclusive school community where every individual feels valued, respected and empowered to be their authentic selves.
